Helping teens make smart driving decisions

According to the CDC, in 2020 some 2,800 teens between 13 and 19 were killed, and 227,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. That’s six teens dying every day from motor vehicle accidents.  A leading risk factor is that as a result of inexperience behind the wheel, teens are more likely than older drivers to underestimate dangerous situations and to make critical decisions errors that lead to serious crashes. We are working to provide critical behind-the-wheel experiences and training to help today’s teen drivers avoid becoming part of these statistics.

The SCCA Foundation works with local SCCA Regions to provide trained in-car driving instructors as well as valuable classroom experience for each teen driver. The Foundation provides the instructional workbooks, instructor and volunteer shirts, and other materials needed to host a successful program. We also provide financial support as needed toward site rental or other expenses.

The Foundation also funds the SCCA National Coordinator for TireRack Street Survival. The TRSS Coordinator actively recruits SCCA Regions to host new schools, supports the steps needed to open registration and market the events, and provides other logistical support to ensure each school is a success for the hosting SCCA Region and the teen drivers. Our thanks to Scott Dobler II for serving in this capacity.

Teens have an 89.2% chance of being involved in a crash during the first three years of driving.

REAL WORLD. HANDS ON.

When your teen driver attends a Street Survival school, they:

  • Learn how to control your car in unpredictable situations based on its handling limits.

  • Master the application of driving physics using their car.

  • Learn how to make good driving decisions and react more quickly.

  • Become more aware and learn how to begin anticipating the actions of other drivers.

What People Are Saying

“My daughter and I attended a course at Montgomery County Community College and it was amazing:

  1. The hands-on driving experience! My teen learned a huge amount about car handling and even about checking tire pressure and filling tires, checking oil, providing jump starts, and what goes on under the hood.

  2. The personal coaching! My teen had her own personal coach in the car who shared tips throughout her hands-on driving experience. The coach put her at ease and made it fun!

  3. The classroom sessions were full of important tips to complement the driving experience.

  4. The volunteer energy was wonderful!

“The Street Survival program is the best! My son participated in the program staffed by Philly SCCA club members last spring. Today it paid huge dividends. He was driving home on a two lane county road, when the minivan in front of him was turning left and was broadsided by a small car traveling at a high rate of speed from the oncoming lane. The car veered directly toward our son. He calmly performed a lane change, which he practiced as part of the Street Survival program. He avoided a head on collision, drove through the debris in the oncoming lane and traveled to a safe location to ensure his tires were ok. He then returned to the scene of the accident to provide his contact info to police as a witness, not a part of the collision.”

“I wanted to thank everyone involved in the Tire Rack Street Survival program. My granddaughter and I attended a class at Coca Cola Park in Allentown, PA. Having her spend that much time actually handling the vehicle in real life situations was invaluable. Her instructor was great and very patient with her. And the classroom information was spectacularly on point. This program gives us (the adults in our children’s and grandchildren’s lives) such peace of mind.”
